For more than 40 years, LAND CONCERN has worked alongside Rancho Mission Viejo in the evolution of one of Southern California’s most distinctive communities. Rooted in generations of ranching and guided by a commitment to stewardship, Rancho Mission Viejo balances the creation of new neighborhoods with the permanent preservation of approximately 75 percent of its 23,000 acres as natural open space.
Within the villages of Sendero and Esencia, LAND CONCERN helped translate that larger vision into the everyday landscape experience. Rather than imposing a conventional suburban identity, the landscape draws from the character of the Ranch itself: its oak canyons and rolling hills, agricultural heritage, informal trails, native and naturalized plant communities, and long tradition of outdoor life.
Community farms, trail networks, recreation centers, pools, parks, overlooks and intimate gathering places are woven together to create a landscape that feels connected to its setting and increasingly established with time. Places such as the Ranch House, Esencia Farm and Canyon House, Oak Canyon, neighborhood parks and the broader trail system make recreation and connection to the land part of daily life rather than isolated amenities.
Across decades of collaboration, LAND CONCERN’s role has been to help create a recognizable sense of place at The Ranch, one that respects the land’s history while supporting the way people live today. The result is a community that appeals across generations, from young families establishing roots to active adults choosing their next chapter, because the landscape offers more than amenities. It offers connection: to neighbors, to nature, to the history of the Ranch, and to a place that feels distinctly its own.
